A friend of mine gave me ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ by E L James for my birthday and I’ve turned into a raging addict. I started reading at nine and kept going until two thirty in the morning and then I woke up at five to finish it. While I was reading I lost track of everything else. My daughter was allowed to watch all the tv she wanted and my husband was fed leftovers. The phone went unanswered and my beloved blog was not updated as it should have been. On the other hand, I felt excited, energized, ready to get creative and desperate to start the second book in the series.

I’ve recommended ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ to all of my friends and they’ve all recommended it to their friends. Books have been passed around, kindles shared and book club meetings set up. Women are bonding over this book, getting closer to their husbands and getting ideas on ways to spice things up.

I’ve never written a book review before, but I’ve had a few people tell me that I should review this one. The problem is I’m not really sure where to start. After all, saying I love it, I love it, I love it isn’t exactly a review. Therefore, I’ve decided that instead of reviewing it in the traditional manner, I would bring up a few points in the book that stood out to me and stayed with me long after I’ve finished reading it.

How would you describe the two main characters?

Anastasia is a smart, sweet girl who is willing to go to above and beyond for the man she loves. She questions everything and has a personality that will draw you in.

Christian is a guy who has a past and because of it he has a need to control pretty much everything in his life. He’s successful, generous, and loveable and although he appears to be overly confident, he’s really very scared.

Why were the characters so interested in each other?

For Anastasia, it was a physical attraction immediately followed by mystery. When interviewing Christian, she couldn’t help but be intimidated by him and wonder what he was holding back. Later on she found him to still be intimidating, but playful and luring as well.

For Christian, it also started with attraction, but then he found himself drawn to her smart mouth and innocence. He was used to always getting what he wanted and Anastasia was the first girl he’d ever gotten into a relationship with who didn’t allow him to control her fully and wanted more than he was willing to offer before they got together.

What is it about ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ that has women entranced?

It reminds you of what it’s like to feel excited and totally turned on by your significant other. Not just sexually, but emotionally and mentally as well. Christian constantly tells Anastasia how beautiful she is and how in awe he is of her. Anastasia constantly tells him how proud she is of him and how loveable he is. After being married for a while, many couples forget why they fell in love in the first place. They forget what it’s like to be crazy excited about seeing each other and having nothing but praise for each other. They also forget to change it up a little in the bedroom so things end up getting stale. ‘Fifty shades Of Grey’ reminds women what love feels like when it’s new.

If you take the sex out of the book, would there be anything of interest left?

Of course! It’s a love story where two people get to know each other, learn about themselves and grow. The sex is just icing on the cake.

Do women actually want to try anything in the book?

I found that most women aren’t comfortable enough with their own bodies to try some of the things mentioned in the book. However, 9 out of 10 are willing to at least try the silver balls and getting tied up.

People have compared ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ to Twilight and Nine And A Half Weeks? Do you see a resemblance?

Ok so Christian is a good looking blond guy but that’s pretty much it. He’s very intense and definitely more into kinky fuckery that Edward from Twilight (come to think of it, Edward was a 100 year old virgin). As far as the food scene from Nine And A Half Weeks goes, let’s face it, they weren’t the first ones to use food to get the party started and they won’t be the last.

Note: Kinky fuckery is what the author calls all of the enticing sex in the book. The red room, the whips, the silver balls, the handcuffs….. they’re all rolled into one delicious book.

Do you really think that the sort of relationship developed in the book can be found in the real world?

Every relationship starts with you getting to know someone better and maybe you’ll fall for them and they’ll fall for you. In this case Anastasia has met a guy who’s totally screwed up, but she gets to know him for who he is and that’s who she falls for. There are other issues that she has to deal with as well, some brought on by society and some based on who she is as a person, and this is something that we all go through in our relationships.

As for the sex part, maybe that is exaggerated because how many men out there can go on the way Christian does? That’s not a bad thing though. I have friends who say that they’ve never been more excited to get to bed than after they’ve read Fifty.

Is there anything about the book that you didn’t like?

The end. I almost had a nervous breakdown because of the way the first book ended but I had the second book ready to go so I was saved.

The Book Summary- Spoiler Alert

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ is about an innocent but intelligent college student by the name of Anastasia Steel who was drafted by her friend to interview a young business tycoon by the name of Christian Grey. During the interview, Anastasia finds Christian to be controlling, intimidating and incredibly gorgeous. Although she’s drawn to him, she feels that he’s out of her league and so she tries to forget about him. As fate would have it, shortly after their initial meeting Christian wound up in the hardware store where she worked and they decide to meet again to take pictures to accompany the interview she did of him. Although Christian was interested in Anastasia he wouldn’t get into a relationship with her until she signed a contract. As it turns out, Christian has a lot of dark secrets that keep him up at night as well as a taste for S&M. The book goes on to describe how the two main characters get together and how their intensely erotic romance evolves.

I have a waiting list of people who want to borrow the book from me and I have to admit that it’s going nicely. My friends can’t wait to finish the series and like me feel a little down when they complete the third one. Hopefully, James will release a series from Christian’s point of view soon. Until then, start reading Fifty so that you can learn what the hype is all about and fall in love with it as well.
