Fashion is always on the go and as we dig out our boots to head into the autumn chill, designers are already asking us to think about next season’s trends. One of the surprises from the spring 2014 catwalks was the Teva sandal.
Even if you weren’t a keen camper in the ’90s you may be aware of the Velcro-fastening sandal, suitable for rambling and often proudly worn by an older male relative with taut white socks. While many of us recoiled in horror at the thought of donning these fashion disasters, Marc Jacobs and Prada have launched them as a future trend.
As a dedicated fashionista you might be willing to faithfully follow the fashion muses, but what would your boyfriend say if you suddenly showed up for a date in a designer Teva sandal? Would he smile at your latest fad, or frown and demand you either re-join the Girl Guides or change them immediately? And, more importantly, would you care?
Despite Prada’s attempt to prettify the style with oversized gems, there’s no denying that Teva sandals are ugly. However, they’re also comfy and practical, and while men may prefer the way our legs look in heels, they are our legs! There’s something satisfying about ditching the endless battle for beauty in favour of a comfy shoe, despite what men think. A recent survey supports our suspicion that men don’t care about our comfort, with wedges topping the poll of shoes men most hate, followed by Ugg boots and Crocs. Other ‘most hated’ styles were ballet flats, flip flops and even trainers.
While this might be enough to send some women running back to their stilettoes, don’t let a man stop you from wearing styles you like. There’s nothing as attractive as confidence, and you’ll feel much better strolling in an ugly style you love than tumbling around in heels.
Whether you pay more attention to the advice of your boyfriend or Marc Jacobs, the only opinion that really matters is yours. As fashion designer Betsey Johnson said, girls should dress for themselves since ‘If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked at all times’. Sandal or stiletto it’s up to you, so find your perfect pair from the range of stylish Oasis shoes at Littlewoods.
