Carla Dawn Behrle: The Designer Behind MIB III

20 Jun

Have you heard about the impression Nicole Scherzinger is making in her first film Men in Black III? Much of that buzz is centered on her Lily Poison dress!

All the leather pieces worn by Nicole in MIB III were hand-crafted by NYC designer of elegant and edgy leather Carla Dawn Behrle! Carla has worked with many celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Bono, Madonna, Stephen Tyler and Angelina Jolie, among others!

About Carla Dawn Behrle

Carla Dawn Behrle is a NYC based designer, who is obsessed with leather and all that it embodies! “The material itself carries a complex dichotomy about weakness and strength, luxury and ruggedness, softness and hardness, the hunter and the hunted, inner and outer worlds and passivity and aggressiveness” Proudly made in NYC. All of Carla Dawn Behrle’s designs are individually cut and carefully made-to-order, in-house by fine craftsmen.  Using only the finest Domestic and European skins, we specialize in small and limited edition runs and custom made.

By the time she was 17, Carla Dawn Behrle was the youngest person in history to be inducted to the Scenic Artists Union. Taking with her a deep understanding of costume history and impeccable tailoring skills, she segued into the tactile, sensuous world of couture leather, and the fashion-forward set took notice.

Carla Dawn Behrle launched her first line, World Domination, in the early ‘90s. The brand’s steamy nod toward James Bond-inspired club-wear saw it take the fashion world by storm, both in the US, under the patronage of Patricia Field, and in fashion-forward Tokyo. Since then, with both World Domination and her couture line, she has repeatedly landed covers and coverage in magazines from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to Rolling Stone, Paper and Spin. Carla’s creations have also defined more than a few TV and movie characters including those in Dinner with Schmucks, Barbwire and Red Shoe Diaries, and this summer will feature in Men In Black III.

Over the years, her unique vision, attention to detail and unparalleled craftsmanship have attracted the likes of Bono, Madonna, Joan Jett, J-Lo, Steve Tyler, The Edge, Angelina Jolie, Alicia Keys, Susan Sarandon, Mary J. Blige, Julia Roberts, Britney Spears and Usher, among many other notable celebrities.

Thank your for this sweet article on my work! I have been very lucky and thrilled to be able to work in collaboration with so many notable people over the course of my career and especially with Mary Vogt, the costume designer who brought me in for the MIB3 project as well as other film projects. It’s always so much fun to work on projects like these especially when the end results are so much fun!

I bought a vintage leather dress in LA when I was there on vacation and it is amazing. I tried wearing it on a date, and guy was not impressed, but he was stupid. Ha. I love leather dresses.
