Going through surgery is scary, not only because you keep thinking about ‘what if?’, but because you may feel like you’re unprepared. Not knowing what you’re getting into can make you nervous and hesitant about going through a procedure that you may need or want. Here are 5 questions that you should ask the doctor so that you can feel calm and collected before the procedure begins.

How many times have you done this procedure?

Surgeons who have regularly performed the procedure have often seen the variations and complications that come with it so they are more able to handle curve balls.

Where will the procedure be performed?

A board certified plastic surgeon who is a member of the ASPS is required to perform your surgery in a certified and accredited outpatient surgery center or hospital.

What type of anesthesia will be used during the procedure?

Type of anesthetic depends on the type of procedure, length of surgery, and professional recommendation of the anesthesiologist.

What are the risks associated with this procedure?

All surgery comes with inherent risks and complications. Your surgeon should discuss the recovery, risks, and alternative treatment options with you so that you might make an informed decision.

Can you provide me with 3-6 references to patients on whom you have performed this procedure?

Your surgeon will provide you with several patients who have undergone your particular procedure so that you can learn about their surgical experience from a patient’s perspective

While these are the main questions that you should ask, be sure to also find out if he will have other people on his staff in the room while performing the procedure. Although you are putting yourself in able hands, it’s always important to have backup.
