It’s funny what people talk about when they think that you’re not listening. I was sitting on the train with my headphones on and the volume low when I overheard two men, one in his 50’s and one in his 40’s discussing the topic of who women dress for. Both of these me were certain that women dress to impress men.
According to these men, a woman gets dressed so that guys notice and hit on her. She wants to show her body so that guys find her attractive enough to talk to her because her looks are the first thing a guy will notice about her. After all, what else is there? A guy won’t notice a woman’s intelligence or personality until after he sees her and maybe based on her looks will give her the time of day. I may agree to the second part of this (after all the first thing you notice about someone is their looks and then you talk to them), but then they threw me off again.
The younger of the two men actually went on to say that his friend’s son who is in college was staring at a girl at a party because she was wearing s super short skirt and a low cut shirt. The girl turned around and gave him a nasty look and the guy responded by saying ‘What? You got all dressed up like that because you want guys to notice you, but when we do you have an attitude! Then what the hell are you dressed like that for?”
Gentlemen, I will tell you the answer because it’s obvious that you haven’t figured it out yet. Sometimes women dress to impress other women and sometimes women dress to impress men. Why? Because we want to feel beautiful and because we may want to fit in with the crowd- especially when we’re younger. However, more important than either of these reasons, we dress for ourselves. Women want to look in the mirror and feel good about themselves. The makeup the hair, the clothes – it’s all done so that we feel like we’ve done something for ourselves. Do we want men to be attracted to us? Of course! Do we want women to notice us? Yes because it’s nice to get a compliment from a friend. However, at the end of the day we simply want to feel good for ourselves.
